SWEETHY reaches 4 milestones related to materials and electrolyser intermediate stack development

Four key milestones in the SWEETHY technology development

In August SWEETHY reached four crucial points, essential for the project progress in the coming periods:

  • MS3: CNR, CIDETEC and SINTEF synthesized and delivered the required amount of the down-selected CRM-free seawater resilient electrocatalysts for further testing with all the developed SWEETHY components at single-cell level in WP6.
  • MS4: CENmat has successfully modified AionFLX membranes by 2 chemical approaches to design the anion-exchange membranes that combine high alkaline stability and hydroxide conductivity with effective suppression of chloride crossover. The membranes were provided to WP6 for further testing of all the developed SWEETHY components at single-cell level.
  • MS6: IC and DLR have identified coating materials for BPP and PTL at both electrode sides that show great potential to withstand highly corrosive operating conditions of the seawater electrolysis. These materials will be further tested together with other SWEETHY components at a single-cell level in WP6.
  • MS5: PROPULS designed the project’s intermediate 5-cell stack prototype with 25 cm2 cell active area that withstands alkaline seawater operation. It will be delivered to RISE for testing in October.
