SWEETHY shares insights on seawater electrolysis at Brittany’s H₂ Research Day

The SWEETHY project participated in the Hydrogen Research Day in Brittany, held on 24 June in Brest, France. The event was organised by the Hydrogen Research Working Group, led by Prof. Philippe Mandin (ERH2), who is also a member of SWEETHY’s advisory board, with the support of the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), the Brittany Region, and Bretagne Next through the Brittany Renewable Hydrogen programme.

The event brought together researchers, academic institutions, industry stakeholders and policymakers to discuss the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities in the field of hydrogen research in the region. The programme highlighted a wide range of topics, including hydrogen production, materials and systems optimisation, storage solutions, emerging technologies, and the integration of hydrogen into regional energy systems.

Dr. Michel Prestat from the French Corrosion Institute presented the goals and recent advances of the SWEETHY project on direct seawater electrolysis. His presentation focused on the challenges of alkaline electrolysis technologies for seawater operation, including the development of solutions that enable hydrogen production directly from seawater without the need for upstream reverse osmosis.

The event also provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange and collaboration through thematic workshops, bringing together researchers and industrial stakeholders to discuss key challenges such as electrolysis performance, sustainability, hydrogen storage, maritime applications, and the role of hydrogen in future energy systems.

SWEETHY’s participation in this event contributed to strengthening collaboration within the Brittany’s hydrogen research community and highlighted the importance of innovative approaches for advancing sustainable hydrogen production technologies.
