SINTEF AS

Organisation Introduction

SINTEF is one of Europe’s largest independent research organizations, renowned for its extensive expertise in technology, natural sciences, medicine, and social sciences. Each year, SINTEF undertakes thousands of projects for a diverse range of clients, both large and small, delivering innovation by transforming knowledge and technology into practical applications. As a multidisciplinary institute, SINTEF excels in applied research, focusing on developing new knowledge and technology aimed at specific practical goals. With over 2000 employees, it is one of Europe’s largest research institutions.

SINTEF’s vision, “Technology for a better society,” drives its mission to conduct contract R&D for both private and public sectors. The institute’s main office is in Trondheim, where most of its research is conducted, but it also has significant operations in Oslo, Raufoss, Ålesund, Mo i Rana, Tromsø, and Brussels.

Why SWEETHY?

SINTEF has a decade-long track record of excellence in electrolyzer and fuel cell research, making it a leader in the field. With decades of experience, SINTEF’s multidisciplinary expertise spans the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to distribution and end-use. This also includes assessing the sustainability of such systems, evaluating their environmental, economic, and societal impacts. Their advanced hydrogen laboratories and participation in numerous projects have positioned them at the forefront of hydrogen innovation. In the SWEETHY project, SINTEF will use their expertise to help develop AEM technology for the emerging application of seawater electrolysis.

What in SWEETHY?

In the SWEETHY project, the Electrochemical Hydrogen Technologies group will focus on developing cost-effective, efficient PGM-free self-standing catalysts tailored for the challenging environment of seawater electrolysis and will contribute to the development of the MEA. The Industrial Economics and Optimization group will provide expertise in sustainability analyses from a systems perspective, including mathematical modelling and optimization of industrial symbioses and energy-system integration. They will also contribute to a holistic sustainability assessment that combines eLCA, sLCA, TEA, and qualitative insights
